Y.E.A. finally arrived...
Enjoy a few pictures and a special treat of Ms. Shaw's students who didn't get to play because of the threat of rain, but took a few seconds to grace us with a song.
Here's a Special Y.E.A.
The GRAND FINALE IS HERE!
Many thanks to all of the students who worked so hard for our wonderful show - truly a legacy that will remain in our minds for some time; so that when we remember it, a smile will come upon our faces and we hope yours as well.
The
GRAND FINALE
is....
JUST AROUND THE CORNER...
The eighth grade students have been working very hard to complete their art work that corresponds with beautiful musical selections from the students of our orchestra teacher, Ms. Shaw. The art work above is inspired by Ear-igami by Richard Meyer. Mrs. Westphal, our drama teacher, has been working with students who will add the drama component; while Mr. O'Connor's students, have planned some really special media arts elements.
All in all our evening will not be complete without your attendance
We hope to see you on Thursday, May 8th at 6:30 in the lobby of the auditorium where there will be refreshments as well as a "pre" art display to give a foretaste of the feast to come during the performance that starts at 7. All the arts; music, visual arts, drama, and media arts will be integrated throughout the show.

The Grand Finale
Students are working very hard and are doing phenomenal work as they prepare for the rigorous study of art in high school. Students are instructed and encouraged to apply past lessons and take risk as they are given freedom to choose and explore the properties of various art materials. Students are encouraged to think seriously about their reasoning for creating the works they do, rather than because they've been instructed to do so. As in everything in life, what we all do, write, say or conversely; it has an impact upon others. Likewise in art - the work of the students has an impact and they should be mindful of this.Students consider their marks on the paper - "Is it accidental or intentional? What am I saying? Is this what I want people to see?"
Students are working very hard to produce their best. They are beginning to take the concept of craftsmanship seriously and are more willing to do studies and more studies until they've accomplished their goal.
Students are working very hard because they want this final show to be the best.
Our fine arts team are combining our students' efforts and working together to bring a Grand Finale for the evening of May 8. As in the past parents and family members will gather on the third floor gallery area of Nichols, (for 6:30), to view the hung works of their children, based upon the music of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir", Robert Longfield's "Turning Point", The theme music from "Schindler's List" and more. Then all will be invited into the auditorium, (at 7:00), as we view a multimedia display of the arts, as Ms. Shaw conducts her orchestra students, Mr. O'Connor projects works of his students along with mine and, Mrs. Westpahl's students join in with dramatic recitations, offering dialogue from the artist that inspired the work.
Please mark your calendars now. Look for updates on this page.

POSTER CONTEST ENTRIES
Eighth Graders Selma and Myria were invited to participate in a poster contest honoring Martin Luther King Jr. sponsored by SCHOLASTIC Inc. The theme of the contest was to answer the question: What are you doing for others? - using visuals. Our hats are off to these two young ladies as they put forth a valiant effort.
The eighth grade second rotation students had their moment to shine brightly despite the -15 degrees wind-chill factor. The third floor Nichols Art Gallery was the happening place! A great time was had by all. Look for more art work on the classwork page under eighth grade, rotation two.
Decisions! Decisions!
What works will Rotation TWO select for our upcoming ART SHOW? I am hosting yet another Eighth Grade ART SHOW. The show will take place on Feb. 7 at 5pm until 6. I hope you all plan to attend. It will be an evening of feasting for your eyes and goodies for your tummies.

Local artist Valerie Engel Schiff is bringing her talents of sculpture and love of history to my sixth grade classes. Working together, Mrs. Schiff and I will teach about African Mask making. As an added treat, students will reap huge benefits from native Chicagoan and artist Anthony Hughes, who traveled the Middle Passage with Captain William Pinkney in 1999, becoming the first Black American to retrace such a time in our history on his yacht. Mrs. Schiif will be with our classes from January through February when Mr. Hughes will join us on the 10th, 11th, and 13th. Please follow our journey into our past on the sixth grade ROTATION THREE page under class work.
On January 23, selected students from my classes had the opportunity to showcase their interpretation of the poem "Music" by local poetic Toly Walker. It was another grand event as District 65 and 202 collaborated efforts to display the talents of our students.
Mural Club had a mini event - We had our holiday breakfast party - see our eats on the Mural Club page :-)
We had a grand time at our Creative Clay Club Art Show - we showcased art from our fall/winter meetings, and met parents, family and friends. Please visit the Clay Club page to view the show.

All had a fantastic evening... Students had a wonderful time and were caught in the moment of showcasing their best; a moment that they can think back on and smile in the days to come.
Thank you parents, relatives, and friends for coming out and showing your children just how valuable their art is - I think they were WOW-ed by everyone's turn-out.
